Medical Insurance Rates for Different Health Plans
Being that there are a number of health plan types, here is an overview of what you can expect on rates for each of these policies.
With group health plans like the HMO, PPO and POS, you are given low premium rates for basic inflexible coverage. There is a network of physicians in each plan that requires co-payments for doctor visits and prescriptions. With the HMO, the cheapest of the three, you are required to use their network of doctors. When using another doctor in the PPO or POS plan, your co-payments are higher. The premiums are also higher than the HMO.
With a fee-for-service health plan, you are required to pay an annual deductible and a percentage of your medical expenses. Basic and major medical coverage is available for your choosing.
A High Deductible Health Plan, HDHP, offers low premium rates and high annual deductibles. Once the deductible is met, the coverage begins. Your rates always remain low.
An HSA, Health Savings Account, is available to those enrolled in an HDHP. It is a tax-deferred health plan that you can invest money into for your health care. The interest is tax-exempt and the money withdrawn for medical bills is tax-free.
Other options available including health insurance discount cards, HRAs (similar to HSAs), COBRA, and short-term health insurance. Browse around for the best rates in your area.
